What types of head protection do you offer?

We supply two main types of head protection: Industrial Safety Helmets and Bump Caps. Industrial Safety Helmets protect against falling objects, collapsing structures, restricted headspace, working from height or protruding objects.

Bump Caps protect workers against bumping the head e.g. walking into a fixed object, and can prevent hair from getting caught in machinery or moving parts. Bump Caps do not offer adequate protection against all risks, however.

What is a Bump Cap?

A Bump Cap is a type of head protection designed for minor impact and static object protection. It resembles a baseball cap and is suitable for low-risk environments like warehouses or light manufacturing.

Bump Caps offer limited head protection and so are not a substitute for more robust headgear like hard hats or industrial helmets, which are necessary in high-risk settings.

What’s the difference between a standard and an industrial helmet?

Standard helmets provide head protection from falling objects, making them the most widely used headgear in workplaces. They can be combined with other personal protective equipment (PPE).

Industrial helmets, on the other hand, have a sturdy, heavy shell weighing approximately 400-500g. These helmets are designed to safeguard workers digging foundations in deep holes, where they face the risk of objects falling both from above and the sides.

What are the safety standards for PPE head protection?

The primary standards for head protection include EN 397, EN 443, EN12492, EN 50365, and ANSI Z89.

Complying with these standards entails undergoing compulsory assessments, with the potential for additional optional tests to ensure the highest safety standards are met.

Working with DCC, you can guarantee that you’ll be supplied with headwear that conforms to the applicable standards.

How do you wear head protection correctly?

Properly worn hardhats can be a literal lifesaver, so training is critical. Ensure the suspension is correctly adjusted to maintain head clearance, and never tamper with the shell or suspension as it can compromise the helmet’s integrity.

Also avoid placing objects on top of the hat or adding stickers, especially if the material is reflective. Safety comes first.

When should head protection be worn?

In any environment where there is a risk of being hit by falling objects or fixed objects, appropriate head protection must be worn. Often, a site will have designated ‘hard hat zones’ in which head protection is mandatory.

At DCC, we’ll help you define what the most appropriate range of head protection is for your workforce.
